Reflections from Khun Watt

The only bad thing about moving Relentless’ base of operations to Bangkok is not being able to work with Khun Watt on a regular basis. She is a true joy and full of compassion, energy, and love for those who have experienced the worst. I asked her to write some of her thoughts about working with Relentless and this is what she has to say in her own words (English and Thai).

ก่อนที่วาดจะเริ่มทำงานกับรีเลนเลส วาดมีภาพหรือเคยรู้เรื่องราวของการค้ามนุษย์ การทำทารุณกรรมอยู่ในความคิดบ้าง แต่ไม่เคยได้มีโอกาสพบเจอกับคนจริง ๆ หรือทำงานร่วมกับองค์การอื่นที่ทำงานด้านนี้โดยตรง

Before I started working with Relentless I had some concepts of trafficked/ trauma/ abused people but I never see them in person and never work with other organization which working on this field.

หลังจากที่ได้มีโอกาสสัมผัสกับคนจริง ๆ องค์การที่ทำงานด้านนี้โดยตรง รวมไปถึงได้มีโอกาสเข้าร่วมการอบรมที่ทางรัฐบาลกับสถานฑูตสหรัฐจัดขึ้น มันทำให้วาดเห็นว่า งานนี้เป็นงานหนักที่ต้องการการทุ่มเท และเป็นงานที่ไม่สามารถทำให้สำเร็จได้ด้วยคนเพียงกลุ่มเดียว หรือภาคส่วนเดียว ต้องอาศัยความรวมแรงร่วมใจ ความมุ่งมั่นและอดทนที่จะทำให้สำเร็จ

After I’ve working with Relentless I have opportunities meet not only with real people  who has been abused and trafficked and real organizations that have been working for those people. I also joined the US consulate meeting twice. It made me realize that this kind of work requires ad strong commitment and hard work.  It seems impossible to make it happen by working alone but by working with excellent colleagues and endurance we can.

สิ่งที่วาดได้จากการทำงานกับรีเลนเลสในช่วง 6 เดือนที่ผ่านมา

Here are the things I’ve learned in the past 6 month from working with Relentless:

·      ความมุ่งมั่น: วาดเรียนรู้สิ่งนี้จากแคทเธอลีน วาดคิดว่าแคทเธอลีนเป็นตัวอย่างที่ดีของความมุ่งมั่น เพราะงานนี้เป็นงานที่ยากและหนักหน่วง การทำสิ่งนี้ได้ด้วยตัวคนเดียวมาหลายปี นั่นย่อมแสดงให้เห็นถึงความมุ่งมั่นที่เขามีต่อการต่อสู้กับการค้ามนุษย์ให้หมดสิ้นไป สิ่งนี้ทำให้วาดมีกำลังใจที่จะสานต่อสิ่งต่าง ๆ ต่อไปในเชียงใหม่ถึงแม้ว่าจะอยู่ที่นี่คนเดียวก็ตาม

·      Commitment: I’ve learnt this thing from Katherine. For me she is an excellent model of commitment. She has been fighting with human trafficking for many year alone. As we know it’s not an easy work at all. This is encouraging me to keep doing the relentless work here in Chiang Mai.

·      รู้สึกมั่นใจว่างานที่รีเลนเลสกำลังทำอยู่เป็นงานที่เกิดผลได้อย่างยั่งยืน ไม่เสียเวลาเปล่า เพราะเมื่อคนหนึ่งคน มีความรู้และความเข้าใจที่ถูกต้องต่อการดูแลสุขภาพของตนเอง เขาจะมีสุขภาพที่ดีขึ้น เมื่อสุขภาพดีขึ้นก็มีแนวโน้มว่าการตัดสินใจในเรื่องต่าง ๆ และมีความเป็นอยู่ที่ดีขึ้นได้ สิ่งนี้ทำให้มีกำลังใจ เพราะรู้สึกว่าสิ่งที่ทำจะไม่สูญเปล่า

·      The more I’ve worked with Relentless, the more I feel confident about the things Relentless has done. The results will be sustainable so that means our work is not in vain. I believe if someone has a correct understanding about health and realize about the rights he/she has and also know the correct way to take care and protect him/herself, it seems like that person trend to have a healthy not only a physical but also with his/her decisions which cause he/she has a better life in a future.

·      ได้มีโอกาสเรียนรู้ข้อมูลด้านสุขภาพต่าง ๆ ในแง่มุมใหม่ ๆ ที่ไม่เคยรู้มาก่อน นอกจากสิ่งนี้จะเป็นประโยชน์กับตัววาดเองแล้ว ยังทำให้วาดมีภาระใจที่อยากจะถ่ายทอดสิ่งนี้ให้กับคนอื่น ๆ ไม่เพียงแค่กับเจ้าหน้าที่ที่ทำงานในสายงานนี้เท่านั้น แต่กับน้อง ๆ ที่ตกอยู่ในกลุ่มด้อยโอกาสด้วย เพราะเป็นข้อมูลที่อาจจะต้องถ่ายทอดซ้ำ ๆ เพื่อให้เกิดความเข้าใจ ความจำและทำได้

·      I’ve learned  new health information.  Besides the health benefits I’ve received, I also want to share it with staff and disadvantaged people.

·      รู้สึกมั่นใจถ้าในอนาคตจำเป็นหรือมีโอกาสได้ถ่ายทอดข้อมูลด้านสุขภาพต่าง ๆ ที่ตนเองรู้

·      I am confident to share all health information I learned  to someone else.

·      ได้เรียนรู้ว่าจะดูแลความรู้สึกของตนเองอย่างไรเมื่อต้องทำงานในสายงานนี้ และอยากจะแบ่งปันสิ่งนี้ให้กับเจ้าหน้าที่คนอื่น ๆ ที่ทำงานในสายงานนี้เช่นกัน

·      I’ve learned how to take care of myself and want to share these tips to other staff in different organizations.

·      ได้มีโอกาสรู้จักกับองค์กรต่าง ๆ ที่ทำงานในสายงานนี้ ทำให้เห็นว่าแต่ละองค์กรทำอะไร เพื่อใคร เมื่อไร อย่างไร ทำให้เข้าใจภาพรวมของการทำงานร่วมกันในเชียงใหม่มากขึ้น

·      I had opportunities meet with other organizations and these contacts made much more sense on who, what, where, how, when and whom in the counter-trafficking work.

·      ได้มีโอกาสพบปะพูดคุยกับ “คนที่เคยผ่านการค้ามนุษย์” / “ถูกทำทารุณกรรม” จริง ๆ ทำให้เห็นกับตาตัวเองว่า คนเหล่านั้นเป็นอย่างไร ทำให้เข้าใจคนกลุ่มนี้มากขึ้น

I had opportunities meet with people truly affected by abuse and exploitation so it made me understand them more. Story about “Fon”*, a teen girl.

วาดได้มีโอกาสพบเจอคนที่ได้รับผลกระทบ/ ถูกเอาเปรียบจากการ “ค้ามนุษย์” ตัวเป็น ๆ ได้เห็นกับตาของตัวเอง ซึ่งวาดคิดว่าเป็นประสบการณ์ที่ดีมากที่ช่วยให้วาดเข้าใจคนกลุ่มนี้มากขึ้น เรื่องราวของ “ฝน”

Once I had an opportunity to attend a clinic with Dr. Katherine at one organization in Chiang Mai city. Dr. Katherine and I had met many young people  who are at  risk about getting infected or spread their STD. We provided them health care checking.  During the clinic, one teen girl has got my attention. She has one year old girl. As I remembered she got pregnant because of she didn’t use any kind of birth control. After having baby she has to taking care of the baby and also broke up with her boyfriend who is her daughter’s father. She doesn’t has job so she does prostitution sometime because she need money. She also got abused sometime too.

ครั้งหนึ่ง วาดได้มีโอกาสทำคลินิกกับแคทเธอลีน เราไปเปิดคลินิกที่องค์กรแห่งหนึ่งในย่านใจกลางเมืองของตัวเมืองเชียงใหม่ วันนั้นเราได้ตรวจหลายคนที่อยู่ในกลุ่มเสี่ยงที่จะติดโรคติดต่อทางเพศสัมพันธ์ สิ่งที่เราทำคือ ตรวจร่างกาย ให้ความรู้ความเข้าใจเกี่ยวกับการดูแลตัวเอง คนไข้วันนั้นเป็นผู้ชายเกือบทั้งหมด มีแค่ 1 คนเท่านั้นที่ผู้หญิง เป็นเด็กวัยรุ่นที่อายุไม่มากนัก ชื่อฝน ฝนน่าจะประมาณ 16-17 ปี น้องคนนี้มีลูกสาว 1 คนอายุ 1 ขวบ สาเหตุฝนตั้งท้องเพราะ ไม่รู้จักวิธีป้องกันในระหว่างการมีเพศสัมพันธ์ หลังจากคลอดลูก ฝนก็เลิกกับแฟน ด้วยความที่ลูกยังเล็ก ฝนเลยต้องเลี้ยงลูก ไม่มีโอกาสไปหางานทำที่อื่น ฝนเลยอาศัยการขายตัวบ้างเป็นครั้งคราวเพื่อให้มีรายได้มาจุนเจือตัวเองกับลูก แล้วบางครั้ง ฝนก็โดนทำร้ายร่างกายด้วย

I have two teen girls who close to her age. My girls are not only very good with young children but they are also sweet, gentle and patient. They know how to do the basic house work and cooking. BUT if you asking me “Are they ready to be mom?” my answer will be “NO” Just like that “Fon” she is not ready to be a mom. She is too young. She’s not even enjoy her full teen’s life yet. This is so SAD.  Sometime I still wonder how is Fon doing? Does she has a job? Does she know how to have a safe sex? Etc.

วาดมีลูกสาว 2 คนอายุไล่เลี่ยกับฝน คนหนึ่งอายุ 15 ปี อีกคนหนึ่งอายุ 13 ปี ลูกสาวของวาดเป็นคนที่รักเด็กมาก ๆ โดยเฉพาะเด็กเล็ก ๆ สามารถดูแลเด็กได้ดี เพราะทั้ง 2 คน ใจดี ใจเย็น แล้วก็อดทน ไม่หมดแค่นั้น ลูกสาววาด 2 คน ทำงานบ้าน ทำอาหารง่าย ๆ เป็น รู้จักดูแลความสะอาดของตัวเอง “แต่” ถ้าถามวาดว่า “ลูกสาวของวาดพร้อมที่จะเป็นแม่ไหม” วาดพูดได้เต็มปากโดยไม่ต้องคิดเลยว่า “ไม่” เหมือนกันกับ “ฝน” ฝนเองยังเป็นแค่เด็กสาวที่ไม่พร้อมจะเป็นแม่คนเหมือนกัน ฝนยังไม่มีโอกาสแม้แต่จะสนุกกับชีวิตวัยรุ่นอย่างเต็มที่เลย ไม่แม้แต่ที่จะมีโอกาสเรียนรู้โลกกว้าง ไม่แม้แต่จะมีสิทธิ์เลือกที่จะ “เป็นแม่” ด้วยความเต็มใจ สิ่งนี้เป็นเรื่องที่น่าเศร้า จนถึงตอนนี้วาดไม่มีโอกาสที่จะเจอฝนอีก แต่หลายครั้งก็ยังอดคิดถึงหน้าของฝน อดคิดไม่ได้ว่าตอนนี้ฝนเป็นยังไงบ้าง
