giving picGiving is a kind of communication which shows sacrifice, support, care, sympathy and desire of wanting to help others. Giving also can be formed or acted in many ways such as giving emotional support, showing feelings or even the giving of items.

Nowadays, many people around the world still need help in different ways, especially children who live in children’s homes or orphanages. Those children are not only seeking real love, good care and close attention, but another important factor is getting good nutrition. I believe that many of you have given or donated food for those children and that means you have a good and caring heart for other people, but we sometimes forget to care and give ‘wisely’.

In Thailand, many thousands of children are facing a malnutrition problem which is a serious situation that needs to be addressed. The Relentless team visited a children’s home in northern Thailand. Most of the children are hill tribe ethnic minority and/or come from the border of Thailand and Burma. Many of them are without effective parental supervision. Their living conditions are limited including food. We found that most children lack good nutrition and malnutrition problems such as anemia and vitamin deficiencies. What we discovered was that lots of children have sores in their mouth and tongue, bad teeth and get sick very easily. The care givers often have to take them to see a doctor at the hospital. The reason for this problem is not only that they do not have enough food, but they do not get good healthy nutrition as well. The care giver shared that many times people come to donate food at the children home and they often bring unhealthy snack, candies, soda drinks and fast food. Every time those children see those foods are delivered, they seem extremely excited and happy to receive since they automatically think that those foods are super expensive or delicious. YES, it is hard to deny that they are so yummy and expensive BUT they do not have good nutrition at all.

As a giver or donor, it might be easy to just buy and bring loads of snacks, candies, soda drinks and fast food for children because of the convenience of time and the amount [and that you want to give these poor kids a special treat]. However, if the donors take time and think about the nutrition of food and how it will affect the children’s health…I am sure we will help to solve lots of problems. Choosing to give good food such as fruits, vegetables, or meats and servehot meals, are the best choices for children and they will learn about the good nutrition they should get and the burden of medical care will decrease incredibly.

Giving and helping children are the ways of showing children love, hope, opportunity and building them good foundational lives. And if we have a chance to ‘give’, we should give ‘wisely’.
